On Aug. 30, Broadband for America partnered with Bloomberg L.P. to present a panel titled “Building Our Digital Future” in Tampa.  Former Sen. John Sununu, Honorary Co-Chairman of Broadband for America, joined Nick Schulz, Editor-in-Chief of American.com and DeWitt Wallace Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, and Robert Litan, Director of Research at Bloomberg Government, to investigate how the U.S. can craft policies that will support the economic engine that is the Internet ecosystem.

The panel detailed how the broadband industry remains a bright spot in the midst of a struggling economy.  The industry is responsible for millions of jobs and trillions in GDP:

  • Broadband network companies support over 10 million jobs and growing.
  • Broadband-related jobs across the U.S. pay more than 41 percent above the national average.
  • 4.1 percent of GDP, totaling $2.3 trillion, in the United States in 2010, is tied to the broadband industry.

In order for this tremendous growth to continue, Sen. Sununu urged that we need policies that are built for the new IP world. This includes eliminating old policies and rules that bear no relationship to a dynamic and competitive Internet ecosystem.  And he urged adoption of Internet governance approaches that are as dynamic and innovative as the Internet itself.
